Finals Food

It's Finals Baby

So we all know what that means...late nights...a need for loads of sugar...and tons of caffeine!

I've had so much sugar in the last 48 hours I think I might be able to take a sabbatical from sugar for the next month...cause it will still be coursing through my system.

After my last final, I am going to go to Piper's Kilt and have the largest and juiciest bacon cheeseburger ever heard of! Thank you God for pubs that specialize in beef and beer.

Final Exam
The Irish Literature exam was at Mickey's, and thank GOD! Nothing like a pint of Guiness and a couple shots of bailey's to wrap up and Irish class. Oh wait is this a food blog or a drink blog?

We had something called Irish nachos...ominous. Actually quite good. They were waffle fries with cheese and chilli. I highly recommend them.

EWWWW Eggs

Due to a lack in funding I have recently been eating in the commons more frequently. It's tragic, I know; however, a college student must survive somehow.

Monday morning after a long night of catching up on work (possibly from procrastinating) I woke up with a strange man making noises in my stomach. I thought it was pertinent to abate this crazy man in my stomach with some sort of sustenance. I went to the commons to grab some breakfast, but I only had ten minutes before my first class so I did not have time to order anything off the grill. This was a mistake.

I took some of the morning potatoes, not bad, and some of the scrambled eggs from the serve yourself portion of the commons. When I took the first bite of eggs I nearly spit it right back out. Eggs are a delicate food item, and the commons managed to destroy them in every way possible. They were completely dried out, cold, and stale. DISGUSTING!!! Yes, that's all I have to say for my recent food experiences.

Homesick...for simple good food!

Last Week:
It was a rough week. Illness overtook my body, and unfortunately when I'm sick that usually means I can't eat either.

Its the worst feeling, being sick and not being at home with your mom or dad. Whenever I get ill in college I miss home the most; Mom hovering over me with a glass of water and a thermometer. When I was able to eat I always had soup, tea, maybe even a grilled cheese!

This last week I had no mommy to take care of me. I attempted to rely on some friends...not the same. I craved the simple goodness of hot tea made for me. And, when I was finally able to eat something I wanted grilled cheese the way my mom makes it. Alas, there was no soup or grilled cheese, just a steady diet of water and tea.

Just a thought; does it seem like when you get sick at college it takes longer to recover than when you get sick at home? I think this happens because there is an absence of help and care from the familiar.

FLORIDA!!!

I play for my college tennis team, and for Easter Break the whole team went to Florida. Now for most people that would mean I was working hard and playing lots of tennis; however, in Amy language that means FOOD!!! I had the chance to escape from school food and eat out regularly.

The Hot Spots of The Women's Tennis Team consisted of:
1. Friday's
2. Chilli's
3. Applebees
4. IHOP

My diet consisted of gigantic pasta plates and french toast. Needless to say I was happy camper every time I left a resturant.

Now, normally you would think that a person would lose weight on an athletic trip, but I am talented and I'm pretty talented and I believe I came back a few pounds heavier.

Both Applebees and Chilli's had a two for one deal on drinks while we were in Florida. Unfortunately, my teammates and I have to follow team and school policy and remain sober during athletic trips. I'll admit I was extremely jealous of those people who were able to take advantage of this situation, but I do plan to see if the deal is still going on this weekend!!!

Spaghetti Carbonara

Before Spring Break I had the opportunity to invade a friend's kitchen. It's not very often that I get to use a kitchen while I'm at school, since my house only has a microwave and refrigerator, so I took full advantage of the situation.

I may have gotten slightly carried away while I was at the store shopping for ingredients (listen to that rule about not shopping while you're hungry). I think I got enough food to feed 25 people, while I was actually feeding 6 people.

For an easy appetizer, so everyone could munch while I finished cooking, I made a caprese salad. It's probably one of the easiest salads to make, and yet it seems so much more elegant and tasteful than a regular garden salad. A caprese salad simply calls for: sliced fresh tomato, sliced fresh mozzarella, fresh basil leaves, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. All I had to was pile the ingredients on top of each other and then drizzle the oil and vinegar over it all. Impress your guests sometime and make this salad...just don't let them know it only took you 5 minutes to make.

I also made some garlic bread to accompany the spaghetti. Garlic bread is fairly simple as we all know. Just butter and garlic salt, then stick it in the oven and you've got toast that is bursting with flavor.

The spaghetti carbonara can be made several ways. Everyone seems to have a different recipe for this classic dish. In mine, for the sauce I just use eggs, cheese, and crushed garlic. Then when I am adding the sauce to the noodles I pour over the pasta bacon that I have had cooking in a dry white wine, that still has plenty of drippings. The key is to make sure your spaghetti carbonara doesn't get lumpy, so make sure you have enough liquid, and serve the whole thing in a heated serving bowl. It's such an easy meal, but it's so good and everyone loves it. I had two marriage proposals from male friends of mine that night, that's how much this easy dish impresses and satisfies everyone!

Of course to top off the whole thing I had dessert, but I didn't make it. I bought a raspberry white chocolate cheesecake from Stop and Shop that was shockingly good. I would recommend it to anyone.

Overall the night was a success, and I ate enough to fill up three grown men, which in Amy language means I went home happy!

Weekend of Feb. 15-17 HEAVEN

Friday night I escaped school campus, and despite a battle with the stomach virus that has been going around, went over to a friend's house to make Japanese food. Perhaps this may not seem like the best choice, but surprisingly I felt much better after consuming something edible and pleasing. We made sushi with crab meat, avocado, and cucumber. By the way, make sure when you buy the avocado its fresh and not brown when you cut into it; very important for the proper creamy avocado texture and taste. Also, trust me, its worth it to buy real crab and not the imitation stuff. Along with sushi, we made rice cakes- this is very easy people: take some rice and mix it with Japanese rice seasoning- and terriyaki chicken. Absolutely amazing! I wish I could say I coupled all this with some high class saki, alas, college students have a budget and we settled with coke a cola.

Saturday brunch- I ventured into the city with a Spanish friend and went to a Spanish/Catalan restaurant called Mercat. In Spain, 1pm when we were at the restaurant, breakfast is still served, so we ordered from the breakfast menu. I had an omelet that was bigger around than my head and at least an inch thick; it had onions, potatoes, and bacon. Accompanying this I had to slices of toast with olive oil, tomato, and garlic smeared on it and I split a plate of potatoes with sauce with my friend. The meal only stayed on my plate for 20 minutes. My friend even told me that the restaurant wanted the plate back, so I should restrain myself from eating it also. Of course at the end of all this I had to make a little room, so I let one notch go on my belt...and maybe I unbuttoned my pants to for a short time. The bacon had a delicious apple-smokey flavor that I could not get enough of.

Sunday was not the most exciting day of the weekend for my stomach, but it was still better than eating on campus. After spending the afternoon supporting the men's tennis team, who won 8-1, coach ordered everyone pizza. I had three slices of pizza from the place down the street, Pizza Mia. I had slices from the peppers and sausage pie. The sausage had just the right amount of spice. Not so much that the sweat shows visibly on my forehead, but enough that I needed to have some water with it.

After this glorious weekend of binge eating outside food, I was not looking forward to another week of the commons...but I forgot, today, Monday, was sushi day! Hooray, edible food for one more day. I prefer the Alaska Roll: salmon, avocado, and cucumber. I still have something to look forward to though, Friday I am making spaghetti carbonara. I'll let you know how it goes.

School Week Feb. 11-15

I suppose I can describe my entire diet this week as a healthy dose of grilled cheese sandwiches, cereal, and lots of very healthy candy i.e. snickers, twix, twizzlers. I 'm glad to know that Chartwells makes its best effort to see that our students are fed well with good brain food so they can function properly for tests and athletics. Yes, I eat oreos before I go to tennis practice because I cannot stomach the site of the lo mien with tofu.

Last Weekend's Cereal Obsession

Feb. 2-4 - This weekend I lived off of cereal. Every time I walked to the cafeteria I walked in only to find that whatever scents invaded my noise merely nauseated me instead of awakening my hunger. I find that cereal is the safest way to ebb my hunger. It is easy to prepare-simply pour and add milk- and can rarely make me ill.
However, Saturday night I did manage to go to Piper’s Kilt for dinner and deviated from cereal. I ordered a hamburger with Swiss cheese and bacon. The burger was medium rare, and the juices that seeped out kept the burger tender and flavorful. Bacon added just the right amount smoky flavor and crunch to the whole affair. Fries came on the side. They were golden and lightly salted; crunchy on the outside but not so much inside. At the end I found my appetite completely satisfied, and unlike most days I did not need to go back to my room and continue to snack on junk food for the rest of the night.

Intro to My food

Food- Appeals to all senses and satisfies the rumbling noise in the stomach, while fueling the body for work. Although a basic part of life, food can be an interesting and intricate topic if approached correctly. Food can either take a person to another level of enjoyment and ecstasy or for a limited time destroy all taste buds.
Unfortunately, while in college food can be the most depressing part of the day, outside of the piles of reading waiting at night. Everyday is a guessing game as to whether or not I will have at least one decent meal. Walking into the commons with a rumbling stomach and taste buds salivating, usually I am disappointed and my initial hunger begins to subside at the sight before me. This blog will explore my daily struggles with finding decent food, while living on a college campus and balancing a schedule of classes, work, and sports. With each entry and description I will endeavor to associate moods with my eating habit, since food tends to make or break my day.
